🔍 DESCO 19290 Surface Resistance Meter (USA)
The DESCO 19290 digital surface resistance meter (for ESD testing) is an upgraded replacement for the discontinued 19787 model. The key differences and information between the old and new models are as follows:
I. Core Model and Background
Full Name: Digital Surface Resistance Meter Kit 19290
Origin: DESCO INDUSTRIES INC, USA
Applications: Surface resistance (RTT) and grounding resistance (RTG) testing of anti-static surfaces/floors/packaging/clothing, conforming to ANSI/ESD S4.1, STM97.1, and other standards.
Test Range: 10³ ~ 10¹² Ω, automatic switching between 10V/100V test voltage.
Core Upgrades: Replaces the old 19787 model, adds digital display and 100 data set storage function.
II. Key Differences Between the Old and New Models (Appearance + Function)
Comparison Items: Old Model | New Model (marked in your image) (New Model)
Button Design: Three black function buttons, no red test button. The middle button has a red circle (this is the test trigger button, corresponding to “Red Pushbutton” in the manual, used to start the test and select the menu).
Operation Logic: The buttons have no clear function distinction; readings are based on the LED strip. The red button is the core test/menu button, making operation more intuitive, and it displays values on an OLED digital screen.
Display Method: Only the top LED strip displays the resistance index (<3~>12). The LED strip is retained, and an OLED digital display is added, allowing direct reading of precise resistance values, temperature, humidity, and test voltage.
Additional Functions: No data storage function. Supports storing 100 sets of test results, with data retrospective capability.
III. Equipment Usage and Accessories
Standard Accessories: Two 5-pound weighted electrodes, test leads, calibration certificate, carrying case; expandable clamp electrodes and microelectrodes for testing irregular/small objects.
Operating Procedure: Place both weights on the surface to be tested, or connect one to the surface and the other to ground;
Press the red test button in the middle (new model), and the instrument will automatically complete a 15-second test;
The top LED strip displays the resistance index, and the screen simultaneously displays the precise value.
Industry Applications: Widely used in SMT electronic manufacturing workshops and cleanrooms for anti-static verification, ensuring products are not damaged by electrostatic discharge.
IV. Supplementary Notes: The “old model” and “new model” shown in the diagram are essentially version iterations of the 19290 model. The core measurement range and testing standards are the same; the main differences lie in the user interface and digital display function.
The old 19787 model has been completely discontinued. The 19290 is currently the mainstream replacement model. The new version with the red button is the latest batch and has more complete functions.
